The platysma is a paired and symmetrical laminar muscle that starts from the mandibular border and reaches up to the clavicles, involving the entire length of the neck. By contracting energetically, it participates in the lowering of the jaw during the process of chewing food.
The platysma muscle is one of the strongest depressor muscles. Its contraction causes the classic platysmal bands, which affect the aging neck.
To address this sagging, neuromodulators are used. However, it is important during the patient assessment to determine precisely whether the platysmal bands are sufficiently tense to achieve a good result. Widely used in aesthetic medicine for its muscle relaxant effect, botulinum toxin, once injected into the vertical bands of the neck, relaxes the dynamic muscles, making them less prominent, attenuating them, and thus giving the neck a smoother, firmer, and more toned appearance.
This treatment is most requested by women over 40. It is important to note that results may vary in women over 50 because the skin is no longer as elastic.
The treatment itself is not painful and is quick to perform. The effect occurs within the first 24-72 hours, and full, stable results are achieved within 10-15 days of the injection. The effects of botulinum toxin last for a period that varies from patient to patient, from 4 to 6 months.
